The BTA Journey

First boarding job: Eighteen years old and caring for 40 primary-aged boarding students at Christchurch Grammar School in Perth in 1975; Steve’s introduction to boarding began as a part time job for two years during Teacher’s College.

Back to Boarding for 24 years: In 1980 Steve and Jenny found each other and married while teaching together in the Kimberley. Steve then became Principal of boarding schools for twenty-four years; firstly in Coolgardie CAPS then on to Wongutha CAPS near Esperance. During this time Steve became involved on the executive of Boarding Australia, and together they saw the need for recognised training for boarding staff.

Then Boarding training: With the support of Boarding Australia, Steve and Jenny customized the Certificate IV in Community Services to become specialized training for staff in the student residential care industry. In 2013 Steve and Jenny formed BTA (Boarding Training Australia) as a Registered Training Organisation. BTA is accredited to deliver and assess CHC42015 Certificate IV in Community Services – student residential care, and CHC50413 Diploma of Youth Work – student residential care.
