Expelled but were there other options?

When eight boys were expelled in 2014 from an independent school in Sydney for a drug related incident, NSW Minister for Education Piccoli was quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as saying “Every school has a responsibility to address the behaviour of their students whether it is a $30,000 school or a government school”, “I think they do have an obligation to not simply find a student’s behaviour unacceptable and just kick them out and allow it to become another school’s problem”.

Unacceptable student behaviour can damage a school / residence reputation, adversely impact other students and make the role of boarding staff very difficult but are there alternatives to expelling the student?
