Eighteen primary aged school girls were killed when a fire swept through a boarding school in northern Thailand on the 22nd of May, 2016.
Thirty eight girls were asleep at the Pitakiatwittaya School in the Chiang Rai Province, when the fire broke out late on a Sunday night.CBS News reports that one of the students said she noticed the fire when she got up to go the bathroom. She said she ran to tell the students in various rooms but some of them didn’t believe her, thinking that it was a prank. They closed their doors and went back to sleep.
A teacher who sleeps in the boarding residence was able to help some of the students escape. Some of the students who escaped tied sheets together to climb down from the second story. The residence was a wooden structure and the fire spread very quickly.
